The one thing that changes everything

Here's something that trips up almost every beginner I've taught: "Fast attack means punchy." It's completely backwards. And once you understand why, a lot of compression starts clicking into place.

What "punch" actually is

Think about what punch actually is. It's the transient — that initial crack at the front of a drum hit, the pick attack on a guitar, the consonant at the start of a vocal phrase. The punch is at the front of the sound.

So what happens with a fast attack?

The signal crosses the threshold. The compressor reacts immediately — fast attack — and turns the volume down. What just got turned down? The transient. Fast attack squashes the punch.

With a slow attack, the compressor takes longer to clamp down. During that wait, the transient gets through untouched — then the compressor catches the sustain that follows. Slow attack lets the punch through.

Grey = the untouched hit. The playhead plays the signal; the amber ramp is gain reduction — it starts the instant the signal crosses the threshold and ramps up over the attack time (not a delay). Fast reaches full almost immediately, so it catches the transient; slow ramps in gently, so the brief transient escapes and only the tail gets caught. Then makeup gain lifts the output: fast flattens the transient so the tail rises level with it (pushed back); slow spares the transient so it towers.

Level match before you judge

When you compare settings, one version usually sounds louder — and louder always sounds better. It's a psychoacoustic trick. Before you decide which sounds better, match the levels with makeup gain, then compare. This is non-negotiable if you want to judge compression instead of volume.

  1. 1Open a session with drums — kick, snare, or drum bus.
  2. 2Add any compressor. Ratio 4:1 · threshold down until you see 6–10 dB of gain reduction · release medium/auto · don't touch makeup gain yet.
  3. 3Set attack to the fastest setting. Listen — the drums should sound flat, the crack gone.
  4. 4Now slow the attack to 30 ms. Listen again. The punch comes back.

That's the concept. Fast attack squashes punch. Slow attack preserves it.
